PORTA Central: Grade Level Newsletters: 3rd grade

3rd Grade Teamletter

September 03, 2010

Mrs. Dempsey
Our first full week has been great!  We are settling into our routine without many problems.  So far, homework has been turned in on time and planners are being checked and signed by you daily!  Thank you!  Students should be reading and practicing math facts nightly along with any other homework.  We have our first spelling test tomorrow.  For the first grading period only, our challenge words will be extra credit.  After that, students are expected to know the challenge words for our tests.  We will be starting our unit on communities next week in social studies.  We have our Weiner Roast/Open House next Thursday, Sept. 9th.  Mr. Kesler has information about these events in his newsletter so please make sure you check it out.  Thanks for sending in snacks for milk break.  Have a great long weekend!

Miss Garst
Hello Parents! We are going to have such a great year!  I am very excited about this school year.  It seems that all the students are excited to be back in school!  We have had such a great start!  Please continue to review the school and classroom respect code with your child.  PORTA Central is collecting Box Tops for Education.  Please send them in with your child throughout the year as we receive 10 cents for each one.  We are also adding a little competition to this to see which class can bring in more! We started spelling (among many other subjects!) this week!  A pretest will be given each week on Thursday.  If your child does not miss ANY of the words on the pretest, he/she does NOT have to take the test on Tuesday.  Spelling is memorization; therefore we will not be spending a great deal of time in class to learn the spelling words.  Your child is responsible for studying the words (basic and challenge words) each night to prepare for the test on Tuesday!  This is something you will have to help with, especially in the beginning. For the first nine weeks, the Challenge Words will be for extra credit but after that they will be part of the test.  I always encourage the students to do the Challenge Words, though!  Attached to this newsletter is an offer from Highlights Magazine.  Please complete the form and return it even if you do not wish to order.  We get free stuff for the classroom with the number of forms returned!  Yea! School pictures are next Thursday—please return the form ASAP! Open house is also next Thursday, so mark your calendars!  Thank you for all of your work and support! Continue to check and sign planners nightly! Have a wonderful long weekend!

Mrs. Wilson
We have had a great week!!! Encourage your child to continue to follow the Golden Rule and we will get along great.  Listening to directions and following through are skills    we will focus on ASAP though.
Emptying mailboxes on a daily basis seems to be a hard thing to do.  If you are not getting information you need, ask your child if he has cleaned out his mailbox lately.
Sept. 12 is Grandparent's Day.  We will be doing an activity and need pictures of grandparents.  Please have your child bring a picture by next Fri., Sept.10.
Book orders are due tomorrow Sept. 3rd.  I'm still in need of a book order parent.  I discussed this in last week’s newsletter.  Please let me know if you are interested.
Last, please complete the volunteer sheet and return.  Even if you don't think you can or don't want to, please return the sheet anyway letting me know that you are not available.  I'll be in touch with you over the weekend concerning your child's adjustment to 3rd grade.  So, I'll talk to you soon.
