Dear Parent or Guardian,
It’s hard to believe that this is the last newsletter of the year; the time has certainly gone by in a hurry. I want to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable summer. Below you will find information regarding registration information for next school year. I want to thank you for your support in making this a very productive and enjoyable school year. REMINDER: Last day of School is Wednesday, May 22 and we will dismiss at 2:00.

REMINDER: Students are reminded to bring their own drink
for the picnic on Tuesday, May 21st.
LUNCH ACCOUNTS
From now through the end of the year, students will not be able to charge lunches. All accounts must be up to date, with no negative balances. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
TRACK & FIELD DAY/PICNIC
Our annual Track & Field meet is scheduled for Tuesday, May 21st. The 5th and 6th grade students will be at the high school track from approximately 8:30-10:30 a.m. and the 3rd and 4th grade students from 1:00 – 2:30. This year we will also incorporate our end of the year picnic (11:00 – 12:00) with the Track Meet. Parents are invited to join us at the track meet, for lunch, or both if you wish. We will be providing lunch for the students on that day, so if you join us during the picnic, we ask that you bring your own lunch. Due to needing to order sandwiches, we will have the picnic lunch on Tuesday, May 21st rain or shine. If you have any questions, please call the office at 632-7781. Thanks for your cooperation.
LOOKING AHEAD TO 2013-14
Registration for the 2013-14 school year will be held on Thursday, August 1st, and Friday, August 2nd at the Petersburg Elementary gymnasium. Specific times for registration will be established and listed in the Petersburg Observer later this summer. School supply lists will be sent home with report cards. Supply lists will also be available on the PORTA web page this summer. Parents of students who will be moving out of the district are asked to contact the school office as soon as possible. Your cooperation in preparing for the 2013-14 school year is greatly appreciated.
NEWS FROM THE LIBRARY
Six Flags tickets will be sent home with report cards. However, report cards and Six Flags tickets will be held until overdue books are returned or money is received. Parents are asked to put the tickets in a safe place as they can’t be replaced if lost.
BARNES & NOBLE SUMMER READING PROGRAM
According to Scholastic Critical Facts, children who read four or more books over the summer fare better on reading-comprehension tests in the fall than their peers who read one or no books over the summer. Barnes & Noble offers a summer reading program entitled "Imagination's Destination" for children going into grades first through sixth grade. This program is offered as a way to help parents encourage children to read books. By following the three easy steps, your child can choose a FREE reading adventure from the book list featured on the back of the attached directions and journal. In addition, be sure to visit the Petersburg Public Library for their summer reading program and Scholastic Book Fair.
INFORMATION FROM THE NURSE
The school year will soon be over. If your student has medication here, that will need to be picked up at the end of the school year. Medications are not sent home with a student. Please call the office at 632-7781 to make arrangements prior to the last day of school. Medications left at school will be disposed of on Thursday, May 23rd. Thank you for your cooperation.
MARKET DAY
The final sale of this school year will be Wednesday, May 29. This sale will be after school is out for the year so please mark your calendars! This will be the last notice for the May Market Day Sale! Thank you for your continued support of the Market Day program. Orders can be placed up to 11 PM on Friday, May 24.
PORTA POOL TO OFFER SWIMMING LESSONS
Registration is now open for the summer session of swimming lessons at PORTA Pool. Children ages two and up are grouped according to age and ability with a small student/teacher ratio. Class times are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings at 9:15, 10:00 or 10:45 a.m. Evening classes are at 5:30 and 6:15 p.m. Lessons begin June 3 and will continue through July 26. If enough interest is shown, a parent-tot class will be arranged. For more information, contact PORTA Pool Manager, Rachel Frost, at 632-4745.
