August 29, 2007
Hello, my name is Rod Helle and I will be filling in for Mrs. Hill's Spanish 2, 3, and 4 classes this year. I come to Porta from Pleasant Plains High School, where I taught Spanish and German. Before that I taught Spanish and German at O'Fallon Township High School. Years ago I taught Spanish at Miami University and the University of Cincinnati. I have a B.A. from WIU, an M.A. from Miami University, and I have studied in Spain (Salamanca), Mexico (Guadalajara), Germany (Bayreuth, Mannheim), and Austria (Elbigenalp). I presently live in Pleasant Plains with wife Jennifer and daughter Phoebe.
The focus of Spanish 2, 3, and 4 will be the development of language fundamentals. Grammar and vocabulary acquisition will be emphasized, and speaking, listening, reading and writing skills will be practiced. I also am looking forward to teaching units in Spanish and Latin American history.
Points in my classes will come from three sources:
quizzes-- There will be frequent quizzes on vocabulary and grammar. A typical vocabulary quiz will consist of 10 to 15 words. Most weeks there will be two vocab quizzes, as well as one grammar quiz.
homework--Most weeks there will be several short homework assignments, usually translation or short essays.
Exams--Exams will be given at the end of each unit.
My schedule:
first hour: Spanish 2
second hour: Spanish 3
third hour:Spanish 2
fourth hour: Spanish 3
fifth hour: lunch/advisory
sixth hour: study hall
seventh hour: Spanish 4
eighth hour: prep
