Spaghetti Supper to Send Students to National Contests
PORTA’s Future Problem Solvers (FPS) of PORTA Jr/Sr High School and PORTA Central and the National History Day Competitors are hosting a Spaghetti Supper/Bake Sale/Silent Auction on Friday, June 1 from 5-7 pm to raise funds for them to go to their competitions.
FPSers part of an international program that develops skills of critical and creative thinking, problem solving, decision making, and communication in students from grades 6-12. Under the leadership of Ms. Woods in the PORTA High School English department Central students Kate Kuehl and Billy Thornton will be attending International FPS competition at the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse along with PORTA High School students Noah Foster and Katie Jacobus.
In addition, two PORTA high school seniors, Tyler Gallion and Michael Warren have advanced through Sectional and State-Wide competition to qualify to participate in the National History Day competition at University of Maryland.
“It costs about $4000 to send our kids to post state competition, but it’s an incredible opportunity for them to grow as students and leaders. We are reaching out to the community for assistance in making this opportunity a reality for our students,” explained Woods.
Community members wishing to attend the Spaghetti Supper can make reservations by emailing Pat Woods at email@example.com. “We’ll serve until the spaghetti, salad, and garlic bread runs out, but it will help us tremendously to have an idea of how many folks might be attending,” Woods noted.
Woods added, “If you aren’t interested in spaghetti, we have a silent auction and a bake sale going on, as well. I’ve seen some of the baskets in preparation for the auction, and they look incredible. We have themed baskets as well as individual items, such as a garden hose wreath, and a collection of Modern Tone dishware.”
Those who cannot attend the event are invited to send donations to the PORTA High School Office at 17651 Bluejay Road, Petersburg, IL 62675. Put “NHD/FPS donation” in the memo line of your check.
