The Sangamon Valley Council #5754 Knights of Columbus will be hosting their Annual Spelling Bee on Sunday, January 27th at 2:00 p.m. with registration beginning at 1:30p.m. in the St. Peter Parish Center, 711 So. 6th Street, Petersburg.  The competition is open to students from any school (public, private, parochial or home).  Students may come to the PORTA Central office for more information regarding the Spelling Bee or call (217)632-0198 for more information.  A KINDLE will be awarded to 1st and 2nd Place Winners. 


PORTA Pool will hold a winter session of swimming lessons for children ages 2 years and older. Lessons are held on Sunday evenings, January 13 through March 17 (nothing on February 3 - Super Bowl) with classes at 4:15, 5:15, and 6:15. Children are grouped according to age and ability with a small swimmer/teacher ratio. For more information and to pre-register, please contact Rachel Frost, PORTA Pool Manager, 217/632-4745.


Six Flags Read to Succeed program has begun for this school year. Please read the form that came home with students. It explains how your student can earn a Six Flags ticket for the summer. Once the student has completed the required reading and documented it, send the form back to the school. Due date is Feb. 22nd. Tickets will be issued during the last week of school before summer break. If you have any questions, contact Mrs. Bell at gbell@porta202.org.

Parents are reminded that emergency school cancellations and closings (due to snow, bad weather, etc.) are announced over local radio and TV stations.  A list of those stations appears below and is also listed on the first page of the student handbook.  Information is also delivered through the School Messenger phone system.

In the event school is forced to dismiss early, all after school programs and extra-curricular activities are cancelled.  When questioning whether school will be in session or close early, parents are asked to utilize the local media for information and only contact the school office if their child’s after school plan will change.
